Tea Crate STEM Challenge

The students were challenged to build a crate to hold a tea bag. Some lasted over 11 minutes before tea leaked!

Mr. Westerman visited Marshall Elementary with the Soil Tunnel Trailer. The kids sure enjoyed his presentation! They also learned about this year's Greenwood County Soil Conservation poster requirements.

100 Days of School

Friday, January 27, 2017, is Marshall Elementary's 100th day of school! To celebrate 100 days, students may dress like they are 100 years old!

Also, if you volunteered to send an item to school for the 5th Grade Kansas Day celebration, it needs to be at school by Friday. Thank you!

Back to School!

I don't know where the time went for the first semester!  It flew by!  We are back and trying to get back into the routine after having a two week break. So far, it has been too cold to have outdoor recess so the kiddos have been cooped up inside all week. Hopefully, it will warm up enough to get some fresh air soon.  I have added the new A.R. due dates to the A.R. page on here.

STEM ACTIVITY

      On the last Late Start, 5th Grade combined classes and then divided into small groups.  Each group was given the challenge of building the tallest free-standing tower with a limited supply of spaghetti, tape, string, and a marshmallow. Students found that cooperation helped them succeed! Some groups were successful and ended with a free-standing tower. Others were not as successful, but they had great ideas of how they'd build it if they had another chance. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

Day 1

What a wonderful first day of the school year!  I thoroughly enjoyed my students and their unique personalities. I'm looking forward to watching them grow and change during the year.

Planners: I'm trying to teach responsibility and accountability.  As long as they are filling out the planner and turning work in on time, students will NOT need a parent signature. If they keep forgetting to fill out their planner and/or have incomplete work, then I will require them to get your signature so you are aware of what assignments need completed at night.  Feel free to email or text me. 620-583-4220 or choover@eurekausd389.net

5th News

5^th Grade News

         The fifth grade students were excited to view the finished quilts they designed during Kansas activities. Mrs. Judy Dunn made the quilts and brought them to school. Students then presented the three classroom quilts to the S.O.S. of Greenwood County. These donated lap quilts will be given to children in need. It sure gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling when you know you are helping someone less fortunate!

         Students have enjoyed learning about nutrition (and enjoying a healthy snack) in April. Professor Popcorn a.k.a. Ms. Ireland, visited with each class weekly. 5^th graders learned about portion size, healthy eating, and the food groups and daily servings needed.  Many were surprised to see actual portion sizes (much smaller than the portions we usually eat).

         State Assessments are officially at an end! The kids worked very hard preparing for the test and taking the test. 5^th graders had to take Math, Reading, and Science Assessments during the months of April! One of the activities Mrs. Burden’s class did to prepare was to go out to the playground and practice ordered pairs on a huge coordinate grid! Who knew math could be fun? They were all anxious for their turn! MAP testing will take place May 2^nd and 3^rd.

 The fifth graders have been working on their conservation posters for the G.W. County Conservation District.  Their creativity just amazes me! Don’t forget about the Track Meet on Friday, May 6^th!  There are a lot of activities going on between now and the end of school.  Please check the website and the teacher’s blogs to keep up to date on upcoming notes and activities. We would like to encourage all of our 5^th graders (soon to be 6^th graders) to read over the summer!

Always Changing Talk Time

We thought we were changing the Always Changing talks for the 5th grade boys and girls, but as of now, the time will remain the same: 8:30 A.M. on May 3rd.  The second grade has kindly offered to switch p.e. times with 5th grade so they can still get to the track that day and practice for the upcoming meet!

Parents, please remember to sign the note designating whether your child can or can't attend this talk. Thank you!
