Endangered Animal Presentations

I just wanted to share how wonderful the Endangered Animal presentations are that my Reading class students have prepared!  They have gone above and beyond my expectations for this project.  Students chose the app of their choice to present the information about their chosen animal.  I have seen a fantastic Prezi presentation, several Show Me ones, and a couple of Keynote presentations.  Several students will present on Monday.  "Wow!" is all I can say about their effort and creativeness!

I am finding it hard to believe that we only have 5 school days left in 2013.  Where did this semester go?  This upcoming week is filled with an A.R. party, a dodge ball tournament, and a class party!  Merry Christmas to all!  Enjoy Winter Break!

Fear the Beards!

The west wing decorated our hall last night.  The students are loving our Duck Dynasty theme!  They even helped make a huge beard using their hand prints today.  You'll have to check out the hall during parent/teacher conferences.  I've listed the A.R. due dates for the second 9 weeks:   Nov. 1   25%,     Nov. 15   50%,    Dec. 6     75%,    Dec. 20  100%   Thanks for all you do for the school and your children!

I've added directions (listed above) on how to get a Parent Account for A.R.  so you can track your child/children's reading goals.  It is very easy to set up!

Please visit with Rhonda in the office about setting up a Parent Account for Power School.  Then you can check grades at any time.   This account will follow your child/children through high school.

Parents and Teachers Together

Would any parent/guardian like to represent 5th grade at the PTT? More parents are needed to make PTT even more successful.  Everyone is welcome to attend the meetings, but Mr. Leis would like at least one  parent to commit to attending on a regular basis.  The next meeting has not been scheduled yet.  Please contact me if you are interested.  THANK YOU!  Mrs. Hoover

To get excited about the Kansas Reading Assessment, students were able to have a Spirit Week in 5th grade.  Monday was a testing kick-off party.  Tuesday was Twin Day.  Wacky Wednesday had students dressed with their clothes on backward.  Thursday was Favorite Team Day for the students.
Students in Mrs. Hoover’s room have been busy!  In Science, they have experimented with light and color.  They used a flashlight and a glass of water to make a rainbow!  They also used other materials to investigate what happened when light hit them.
Mrs. Hoover’s reading class recently read “The Memory Box”. Each student then made and decorated his/her own memory box. Students enjoyed sharing them with the class.  Soon students will begin reading the novel The Whipping Boy.
Math class has been very busy trying to prepare for the Kansas State Assessment.  Students have been learning about two and three  dimensional shapes.  They have looked at the shapes from different views.  Students have also looked at the nets they make.  Measurement and converting measurements will be covered soon.  Students can work on Study Island and IXL at home for extra math practice.
Mrs. Richardson visited our classroom recently to present an Ag in the Classroom activity.  Students discussed soybeans and learned how often they are found in the foods we buy and eat.  Each was able to make a “living necklace” that used soybeans, polymers, and water.  It was exciting to wear the necklace and watch the beans sprout!

Good morning!  It is the last 9 weeks of school!  Parent/teacher conferences are going on this week.   Students are also taking the Kansas State Reading Assessment.  To help lessen the stress of test taking, we've tried to lighten the mood by having special "days".  Monday we had a testing kick-off party.  Tuesday was Twin Day.  Wacky Wednesday has kids wearing their clothes backwards and inside out.  Thursday will be Favorite Team Day.

A.R. Dates:
March 29    25%
April 12       50%
April 26       75%
May 10      100%

I'm glad we are back to school after the winter storms.  I think students enjoyed the snow.  I heard many stories about sledding and snowmen!  Today my mom visited the class.  She brought back the finished quilts she had sewn.  The students had designed them during the Kansas Day activities.  She will donate them to the local SOS for children who need them.

Kansas Day!  What a fun day we've had!  This morning we had three presenters share their knowledge.  Mrs. Judy Dunn shared her quilts and had the students in each class design a quilt.  She will quilt it, and then they'll donate them to a good cause.  Mrs. Vessie Gulick told students how to weave wheat and had beautiful examples.  She also shared many Kansas rock samples.  Mr. Travis "Grizzley" Tastove with Americorps from Cross Timbers presented about Lewis and Clark's expedition. He also shared artifacts, pelts, and skulls.

The annual Kansas Quiz Bowl was held in the afternoon.  Teams competed against each other.  Unfortunately,  I will have to update you tomorrow on which team won because we had buzzer problems and didn't have time to finish.  We ended the day with sunflower cakes and drinks.

Oh my, I had 4 students home sick from my home room today! I know there were two others from another class.  It seems that strep throat and influenza A are hitting the 5th grade hard this week!  I've sent the water bottles down to be washed.  Please remind your child to wash his/her hands with soap well during the school day.  Those playing basketball need to remember to wash hands after practice or games.

Tomorrow is Late Start day!  Short week of school for students!
